The Weak-Currency Playbook — Where Your Dollar Goes Furthest in 2026
2026-08-20
The idea
Airfare is roughly constant; on-the-ground cost is not. The single biggest lever on your daily budget is the local currency’s strength against yours — and that’s forecastable, unlike “where’s trending.”
Where it paid off
- Japan (weak yen): record visitor numbers, still cheap by 2019 standards.
- Turkey (lira): dramatic for visitors, brutal for locals — travel ethically.
- Georgia / Armenia: structurally undervalued, great Wi-Fi, English-friendly.
How to use it
Pick 2–3 target currencies, watch them quarterly, and book the trip when yours is strong. It’s not glamorous, but it’s the difference between $60/day and $120/day for the same trip.
Caveat
Weak currency often means a weak local economy. Spend locally, tip well, and don’t gloat about the deals.
