Europe · Best: Late spring (May–Jun) and early autumn (Sep) · verified August 2026

Antalya Coast
Turquoise Coast on a budget — paragliding over Ölüdeniz, empty-sand Patara beaches, and Antalya's walled old town, after the summer crowds leave.
Europe · Best: Autumn (Sep–Oct) and Spring (Apr–May) · verified September 2026

Bali
The Island of Gods on a budget — surf, rice terraces, and temple ceremonies for less than a Lisbon hostel, now with a tourist levy and a stronger rupiah.

North America · Best: Late May–Jun (shoulder, free park entry via Canada Strong Pass) and Sep–Oct (larch season) · verified September 2026

Barcelona
Mediterranean metropolis where Gaudí's still-unfinished masterpieces meet some of Europe's worst pickpockets — and a mid-range day sits around €130–180 with the tourist-rental era winding down.
Europe · Best: Spring (Apr–Jun) and early autumn (Sep–Oct) — avoid July–August if you hate heat + peak pricing + anti-tourism protests · verified September 2026

Bhutan
The receipts line here is not the airfare, it is the per-night Sustainable Development Fee: the Royal Government of Bhutan charges every visitor US$100 per person per night, children 6-12 pay US$50, and the fee is paid with the visa, not at a hotel desk. On top of that you must travel with a licensed guide, and you cannot rent a car and drive it yourself. Thimphu food is genuinely cheap (Numbeo puts an inexpensive meal at Nu.250, ~$2.60), so the daily spend is the fee plus a guided programme, not food. The US State Department rates Bhutan Level 1, Exercise normal precautions, issued 4 September 2026, and the tourism authority names March-May and September-November as the climatically best months, with October the clearest of them.
Asia · Best: October is the month to go if you want the Himalayan views. The tourism authority's own weather page names March, April, May, September, October and November as the climatically best months, and October sits at the end of the post-monsoon clear-sky window with the monsoon usually arriving in the last week of June and the heaviest valley rain over by early September. Note what October is NOT: the biggest tshechu festivals fall in spring, and the 2026 Thimphu Tshechu is 21-23 September, so if a festival is your reason to come you are a year out. Winter (mid-November to mid-March) is dry, brilliantly sunny and cold, with daytime temperatures peaking around 15C and nights below zero in the high valleys. Spring (March-May) brings rhododendrons and Paro Tshechu. October's practical edge is that the trekking routes to Tiger's Nest and further are usually open and the air is at its clearest, but the days are short and cold after sunset. · verified October 2026

Budapest
Danube-split grandeur — thermal baths, ruin bars, and one of Europe's best urban parks, at prices that undercut the West by half.
Europe · Best: Spring (Apr–May) and Autumn (Sep–Oct) · verified September 2026

South America · Best: March–May and September–November (autumn and spring shoulder seasons); jacarandas bloom mid-October–November · verified September 2026

Busan
Korea's second city is a coast-and-hills break that finally skips the Seoul crush: mid-range days run ₩150,000–260,000 (~$110–191), the metro is a 1,300-won flat fare, and October 2026 runs 17–22°C under the 31st Busan International Film Festival (6–15 Oct).
Asia · Best: April–June and September–November; October is high season with fall colour and BIFF, July–August is hot, humid and 50–60% of the year's rain, and December–February is cold and dry · verified September 2026

Colombia
Colombian coffee, Caribbean coast, and Andes peaks — one of South America's best-value destinations, where a backpacker gets by on ~$30–50/day and a mid-range trip runs ~$70–100/day. September is the shoulder sweet spot: rain-light, crowds thin, and prices between seasons.
South America · Best: December to March is the dry season (Caribbean coast + Andes clearest); July–August is the second dry window. September is the shoulder — rain returns to some regions, but prices drop and crowds thin. · verified September 2026

Croatia
Croatia's Adriatic coast — walled Dubrovnik, Roman Split, and island ferries — runs on the euro and sits in the Schengen zone. September shoulder season is the sweet spot: 30–50% cheaper than August peak, warm enough to swim, and the crowds are gone. A backpacker gets by on ~€55–75/day, a comfortable mid-range trip runs ~€110–160/day.
Europe · Best: September–October is the shoulder sweet spot — 20–30°C, warm water, 30–50% below July–August prices. May–June is the other shoulder window; July–August is peak (hot, crowded, +50–70% on coastal accommodation). · verified September 2026

North America · Best: Dry season (November–April); autumn (Oct–Nov) hits the sweet spot — Day of the Dead spectacle, mild days, cool nights · verified September 2026

Namibia
The receipts line here is the levy, not the airfare: Namibia Tourism Board charges a bed-based tourism levy of 2% on room-only or bed-and-breakfast rates and 1% on all-inclusive rates, collected by the accommodation and non-taxable. Windhoek mid-range days run NAD 4,200-7,000 (~$256-426), food is the cheap half (an inexpensive meal is NAD 190), and the visa-on-arrival fee is NAD 1,600 for non-AU passports. October sits at the tail of the May-October dry season the NTB names as best for wildlife.
Africa · Best: October is the last month of the dry season the Namibia Tourism Board names as best for wildlife viewing (May-October), so animals concentrate at the waterholes with the rains still weeks away. November-December is hotter, wetter and greener with fewer crowds and lower lodge rates. The cold Atlantic coast at Swakopmund runs foggy and cool much of the year regardless of season. · verified September 2026

Philippines
7,641 islands of white sand, turquoise lagoons, and some of the world's best diving - a mid-range day in the Philippines costs $72-136, but backpackers can thrive on $32-56. The peso's 2026 weakness makes it one of Southeast Asia's best value destinations.

North America · Best: Late September to mid-October. The first three weeks of September are the cheap shoulder (rates 20-30% under summer peak) and whale watching is still running, but in-town foliage is not there yet. Peak colour is 1-15 October, which is also peak price — book three to six months out or accept the colours somewhere else. · verified September 2026

October–November is the window: 21.9–24.6°C on the CWA's own 30-year means, past the typhoon season.
Asia · Best: October–November is the sweet spot (21.9–24.6°C); March–April is the other good window. May–September is typhoon season and Taipei's rainiest months by volume, and December–February is cold and damp at 16.4°C · verified September 2026
