Namibia
The receipts line here is the levy, not the airfare: Namibia Tourism Board charges a bed-based tourism levy of 2% on room-only or bed-and-breakfast rates and 1% on all-inclusive rates, collected by the accommodation and non-taxable. Windhoek mid-range days run NAD 4,200-7,000 (~$256-426), food is the cheap half (an inexpensive meal is NAD 190), and the visa-on-arrival fee is NAD 1,600 for non-AU passports. October sits at the tail of the May-October dry season the NTB names as best for wildlife.
The short answer
- Cost: mid-range ≈ $256–426/day
- Best time: October is the last month of the dry season the Namibia Tourism Board names as best for wildlife viewing (May-October), so animals concentrate at the waterholes with the rains still weeks away. November-December is hotter, wetter and greener with fewer crowds and lower lodge rates. The cold Atlantic coast at Swakopmund runs foggy and cool much of the year regardless of season.

Money & cards
The Namibian dollar (NAD) is pegged 1:1 to the South African rand and both are legal tender. Cards are widely accepted in Windhoek and Swakopmund, but fuel, park gates, campgrounds and small roadside stalls are cash-only. 1 USD = 16.41585 NAD (open.er-api, 1 October 2026 00:02:31 UTC; Frankfurter's ECB mirror does not publish NAD, so this is a single-route rate with no second-agreeing source).
SourceTipping
Not compulsory, but 10% of the bill for a guide or a fine sit-down dinner is normal and split tips are handed over in cash at the end of a safari. Fuel attendants fill and clean the windscreen and are tipped a few rand. [inferred from local custom]
SIM / eSIM
MTC and TN Mobile are the two networks and both sell tourist SIM packs at the Hosea Kutako airport arrivals hall and in Windhoek. Coverage is good in town and on the major paved highways but drops out entirely in the gravel park reserves, so download offline maps before leaving Windhoek. International roaming agreements exist with 146 countries across 334 network partners (Namibia Tourism Board).
SourcePower plugs
Plug type D/M, 220-240V, 50Hz — the three-round-pin European style plus the older South African type. A Type C to Type D adapter covers most devices. Pack an adapter with USB charging regardless; note that a US flat two-pin plug does not earth.

- Hand-verified 1 October 2026 against first-party sources: Namibia Tourism Board (FAQ — levy 2%/1%, dry season May-Oct; visa/entry lists), Namibia Ministry of Home Affairs Immigration Safety and Security (visa general information, N$80 handling fee), Permanent Mission of Namibia in Geneva (fee schedule effective 1 April 2025), Namibia Wildlife Resorts (Etosha entry fees), and the US State Department advisory (Level 2, issued 15 May 2026).
- TOURISM LEVY — the receipts line: 2% of the room rate where booked bed-only or bed-and-breakfast, 1% where all-inclusive (NTB FAQ). Bed-based, collected by the accommodation establishment, compulsory to collect, NON-TAXABLE, and calculated on the amount charged to the guest after any commission is deducted. Campsites, camping and caravan parks are EXEMPT.
- Budget 1,500-2,600 NAD/day (~$91-158) - campsite or backpacker lodge, self-catering, self-drive share of the rental. Numbeo (last update 25 September 2026) puts an inexpensive Windhoek meal at NAD 190 (range 120-300).
- Mid 4,200-7,000 NAD/day (~$256-426) - lodge room plus restaurant meals plus park fees. Numbeo mid-range three courses for two NAD 1,050 (range 600-1,300), i.e. ~NAD 525 a head.
- Comfortable 11,000-20,000 NAD/day (~$670-1,218) - Damaraland/Sossusvlei lodges plus guided activities. [inferred] bracket: lodge rate band published here is an indicative planning range, not a quoted rack rate.
- Converted at 1 USD = 16.415853 NAD (open.er-api, 1-Oct-2026 00:02:31 UTC). NOTE: this is a SINGLE-ROUTE rate — Frankfurter's ECB mirror does not publish NAD, so this entry is not cross-checked against a second FX route. Stated rather than presented as a two-source agreement. NAD is pegged 1:1 to ZAR and both are legal tender.
- Park fees are official, per person per 24-hour period, charged for people AND vehicles: Etosha foreign adults NAD 150/day, foreign children 9-16 NAD 100, vehicles <=10 seats NAD 50/day (Namibia Wildlife Resorts). The 24h clock starts at entry — minimum payable is 24 hours, no half-day fees, non-refundable, non-transferable.
- Visa on arrival: NAD 1,600 non-AU / NAD 1,200 AU adults; minors 6-11 NAD 800 / NAD 600; under-6 exempt. Applies to ~33 nationalities including US, UK, Canada, Australia and most EU member states, at designated entry points only (Hosea Kutako, Walvis Bay, Oshikango, Trans-Kalahari, Oranjemund, Noordoewer, Katima Mulilo, Ngoma, Impalila, Mohembo). Online pre-application via eservices.mhaiss.gov.na. Valid up to 3 months from entry, one extension in Windhoek.
- Separate cruise day-visit fee of N$300 per person for passengers disembarking at Walvis Bay and Lüderitz harbours, approved by Cabinet and published by the Namibian mission in Geneva.
- NOT a Schengen visa — the 90/180 rolling window does not apply, so a Namibia stop does not consume Schengen days.
- Flights: Hosea Kutako (WDH) is the main gateway, ~45km from Windhoek; thin direct long-haul means most itineraries connect via Johannesburg, Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Dubai. [inferred] flightBase is a planning baseline, not a live fare.

TL;DR
Namibia is a receipts trip with one line item that most blogs miss: the tourism levy. The Namibia Tourism Board charges 2% of the room rate where you are booked bed-only or bed-and-breakfast, and 1% where you book all-inclusive. It is collected by the accommodation, it is compulsory, and it is non-taxable. That last detail matters — you cannot reclaim it, and it is the reason an online quote and the hotel’s front-desk rate can differ.
Mid-range days run NAD 4,200-7,000 (~$256-426). The daily number is set by two things only: the car and the lodge. Food is the cheap half — Numbeo puts an inexpensive meal in Windhoek at NAD 190 (range 120-300).
Who it’s for
You are driving, not taking trains. You will spend your waking hours in a vehicle, most of your nights in a lodge that is more expensive than your house, and you will be paying to enter the same park twice if you stay inside it. If you want cities, museums or a walkable evening, Namibia will disappoint you. If you want the most under-priced dramatic landscape on the continent and you are comfortable booking your own rental, it is excellent value.

Getting there
Fly. Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) is the main gateway, about 45km east of Windhoek. Direct long-haul service to Europe is thin and seasonal, so most travellers connect through Johannesburg, Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Dubai and then take a domestic hop to Windhoek — which is how most itineraries are actually built. Walvis Bay and Lüderitz have their own small airports.
Drive or don’t. The Namibia Tourism Board puts it bluntly: public transport “covers the bare minimum”, so the car is the transport. Two-wheel drives from the international rental firms run roughly NAD 900-1,800 per day in high season depending on the vehicle class, and that figure is the single largest line in a Namibia budget. Book ahead for October — it is peak season and the 4x4s go first.
Where to stay
| Tier | Where | Nightly |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Campsites and backpacker lodges in Windhoek, Swakopmund | NAD 250-450 |
| Budget | Campsites inside Etosha (Camp !Khebush) | NAD 350-450 per site |
| Mid | Guesthouses and self-catering flats, Windhoek and Swakopmund | NAD 900-1,600 |
| Mid | Lodge accommodation on park perimeters (Okaukuejo, Halali) | NAD 1,200-2,000 |
| Comfortable | Lodges in Damaraland and Sossusvlei | NAD 2,500-5,500 |
Camping inside a national park is the single best value move available here. Inside Etosha you pay the vehicle fee once and the per-person fee once, and the waterholes put animals in front of you at dawn without a price tag. Note the levy does not apply to campsites, camping and caravan parks — only to the accommodation establishments.
Where to eat
| Spot | Meal |
|---|---|
| Local braai in a Windhoek shebeen | NAD 120-250 |
| Inexpensive restaurant, Windhoek (Numbeo) | NAD 190 (range 120-300) |
| Mid-range, three courses for two (Numbeo) | NAD 1,050 (range 600-1,300) |
| Fast-food combo | NAD 100 |
| Grocery shop, sandwich and drink | NAD 80-150 |
The shebeen system — a licensed neighbourhood bar where you buy your own food from a grill and eat it there — is the standard local meal and the cheapest way to eat in Windhoek. Stock up at a supermarket before entering a park reserve: prices inside the gates roughly double.
Itinerary sketch
Five days, one direction, no backtracking.
- Windhoek — collect the car, provision, acclimatise. The Independence Memorial Museum and the craft market in the centre are worth an afternoon before the drive.
- Sossusvlei and Deadvlei — the dune climb at sunrise, then the white clay pan with its 900-year-old dead camel thorn trees. Go early: the pan is at its most mirror-like before the wind picks up at mid-morning.
- Swakopmund — Atlantic coast, German colonial architecture, theSkeleton Coast north of town. Cool and foggy even in October.
- Spitzkoppe — the granite inselbergs, between Swakopmund and Etosha on the road north.
- Etosha — two full days minimum inside the park to have any chance of the big cats. Okaukuejo and Halali are the practical overnight bases.
Cost guide (from dataset, hand-verified September 2026)
| Item | Budget | Mid-range | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | NAD 250-450 | NAD 900-2,000 | NAD 2,500-5,500 |
| Food | NAD 250-450 | NAD 600-900 | NAD 1,200-2,000 |
| Local transport | NAD 150-300 | NAD 400-700 | NAD 900-1,500 |
| Park fees | NAD 200 | NAD 200-350 | NAD 400 |
| Activities | NAD 0 | NAD 500-1,200 | NAD 1,500-3,000 |
| Daily total | NAD 1,500-2,600 | NAD 4,200-7,000 | NAD 11,000-20,000 |
Two entries in that table need their provenance stated rather than assumed:
- Park fees are official, per person per 24-hour period, charged for people and vehicles both. Etosha charges foreign adults NAD 150/day and vehicles under 10 seats NAD 50/day. The 24-hour period starts when you enter, so a 4pm arrival does not buy you a cheap second half-day — the minimum payable is 24 hours and there are no half-day fees.
- The tourism levy sits on top of the accommodation figure above, at 2% bed-only/B&B or 1% all-inclusive. It is not folded into the nightly numbers.
Safety
The US State Department advisory for Namibia is Level 2, exercise increased caution, issued 15 May 2026, citing crime and health. In practice the country is widely travelled and the tourist circuit — Windhoek to Swakopmund to Etosha — is well-patrolled and busy. Take the usual precautions in Windhoek, do not walk in the city at night, and do not leave anything visible in a vehicle at a fuel station or a roadside stop. Never leave a vehicle on the shoulder of a gravel road.
Malaria is a real consideration in the northern and northeastern regions (Etosha and the Kavango) outside the dry season; the NTB recommends consulting a travel clinic, and yellow fever proof is required if you arrive from or transit a yellow-fever country.
Good to know (2026)
- The levy is the line to check on your bill. It is compulsory for the establishment to collect and non-taxable, so it is a cost to you, not a recoverable input. Ask for the levy line on the invoice rather than assuming it is included in an online rate.
- October is peak season and the 4x4s are the constraint, not the beds. Book the vehicle first, then the lodge.
- Campsites, camping and caravan parks are levy-exempt. Where the budget is tight, that exemption is worth designing the route around.
- Cruise passengers using Walvis Bay or Lüderitz harbours pay a separate day-visit fee of N$300 per person on top of anything else — approved by Cabinet and published by the Namibian mission in Geneva.
- Renting in South Africa and crossing the border is possible and usually cheaper, but the rental contract must permit it in writing and you take on the border-crossing fee and any insurance exclusion. Read the contract before you sign, not at the border post.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does a day in Namibia cost?
- From the site's hand-verified dataset (September 2026): budget NAD 1,500-2,600 (~$91-158), mid-range NAD 4,200-7,000 (~$256-426), comfortable NAD 11,000-20,000 (~$670-1,218) per person per day. Budget assumes a self-drive with a hostel or campsite bed and self-catering; mid-range assumes a lodge room, restaurant meals and park fees; comfortable assumes a lodge with full board and guided activities. Namibia's daily cost is dominated by the car and the lodge, not by food.
- What is the tourism levy and how much is it?
- The Namibia Tourism Board charges a bed-based tourism levy collected by the accommodation on your behalf: 2% where the rate is bed-only or bed and breakfast, and 1% where the price is all-inclusive. It is compulsory for the establishment to collect, applies to hotels, lodges and guesthouses (campsites, camping and caravan parks are exempt), is non-taxable, and is levied on the amount charged to guests after any commission is deducted. That is why the OTA price and the hotel's rack rate are not always the same number.
- Do I need a visa for Namibia?
- Passport holders of about 33 countries including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and most EU member states need a visa, which is available on arrival at designated entry points for NAD 1,600 for non-African-Union nationals (NAD 1,200 for AU nationals). Minors aged 6-11 pay NAD 800 (NAD 600 for AU); under-6s are exempt. You can apply in advance through the official e-services portal and the visa is valid for stays of up to three months from entry, extendable once in Windhoek.
- Is October a good time to visit?
- It is the last month of the dry season. The Namibia Tourism Board states wildlife viewing is best from May to October, when animals concentrate around the permanent waterholes. By late October the first rains can begin in the north, which is exactly when the herds start spreading out again and lodge rates start to soften.
- Do I need a 4x4 to visit Namibia?
- For Etosha and the main paved routes a normal car works, and the gravel roads between Swakopmund, Sossusvlei and the Naukluft approaches are passable in a sedan in dry weather. For the sandy stretches in the far north and around the Sesriem Canyon/Sossusvlei approach, and for Sandwijk and the Sesriem gate road itself, a high-clearance 4x4 is the vehicle most travellers rent and it is worth the money in October.
Where next?
- Cape TownA mountain-backed port city where a cable-car ride, penguins on a beach, and a Cape Malay cooking class can all happen in one day — strong value for dollar holders when the rand is weak, with real safety caveats you need to plan around.
- EgyptPyramids, Nile cruises, and 5,000 years of history - a mid-range day in Egypt costs $85-150, but backpackers can survive on $25-45. The Grand Egyptian Museum, opened November 2025, is the new anchor attraction.
- MarrakechRed-walled medina, spice-scented souks, Atlas foothills, and riads that feel like palaces — Marrakech is sensory overload at a fraction of European prices.
