Money & cards
Currency is the Armenian dram (AMD, ֏). Cards are widely accepted in Yerevan (hotels, restaurants, larger shops) but cash is still essential in villages, for marshrutkas, monastery entry, and markets. Carry small notes. ATMs are common in Yerevan and larger towns. US dollars and euros are accepted at some places but the dram rate offered is poor.
SourceTipping
[inferred from local custom] Tipping is appreciated but modest, around 5-10% in restaurants if a service charge is not already added. Round up taxi fares. Not obligatory.
SIM / eSIM
eSIMs for Armenia start from ~$3-8 (Airalo, Holafly 2026). Local operators Ucom, Beeline, and Viva-MTS offer prepaid SIMs at the airport and city kiosks. 4G covers Yerevan and the main road network; coverage is patchy in remote mountain areas and some border regions.
Power plugs
Plug type C and F (two-pin round), 230V 50Hz, same as most of continental Europe. Bring a universal adapter if coming from the UK or US.

TL;DR
Armenia is the Caucasus country where a mid-range day sits around $40/day (14,703 AMD) — the site’s hand-verified October 2026 dataset puts budget at ~$17/day (6,261 AMD), mid at ~$40/day (14,703 AMD), comfortable at ~$84/day (30,593 AMD). Millennium-old monasteries carved into cliffs, a wine culture older than Europe’s, and a walkable capital all cost a fraction of Western Europe. The 2026 hook: visa-free entry for 180 days for US, UK, EU, Australian and Japanese passports — and Wizz Air’s first-ever London-Yerevan route launched June 2026, with a third aircraft based at Yerevan taking the low-cost network to 18 routes across 10 countries.
Who it’s for
- Budget travellers: guesthouses and hostels from ~$14/night (5,017 AMD), street food and marshrutkas, and free entry to the great monasteries. Armenia is in the top 10% of European countries for affordability.
- Mid-range travellers: private rooms in mid-range hotels, restaurant meals (~4,000 AMD for an inexpensive meal), and taxis or a shared marshrutka between the monastery towns. A week runs ~$300-400 including flights from Europe.
- History and architecture lovers: Geghard and Noravank (UNESCO), the pagan Garni Temple, Tatev, and Khor Virap with its Mount Ararat view are among the oldest and most dramatic Christian monuments anywhere.
- Food and wine travellers: Armenia claims the world’s oldest winery (Areni cave) and a cuisine — lavash, khorovats, dolma — recognised by UNESCO. Harvest season is September-October.
- Digital nomads and slow travellers: 180-day visa-free stay, low cost of living, good internet in Yerevan, and a growing cafe scene make it a strong long-stay base.
- Not for: those who need beach resorts or reliable summer comfort — Armenia is landlocked, and July-August in the Yerevan valley can top 35C. Winter is cold and mountain monasteries can be snowbound.

Getting there
Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) is Yerevan’s main gateway, ~12 km west of the city. As of 2026, around 39-41 airlines serve EVN to ~83-119 destinations.
From Europe (direct nonstop): Lufthansa (Frankfurt), Air France (Paris CDG), Brussels Airlines, Austrian (Vienna), LOT (Warsaw), airBaltic (Riga), Condor, and a heavy Wizz Air / FlyOne low-cost network (London Luton, Paris Beauvais, Milan, Rome, Berlin, and more).
From the Middle East and CIS: flydubai (Dubai), Qatar Airways (Doha), Air Arabia (Sharjah), and dense Aeroflot / FlyOne / Azimuth / Shirak service across Moscow’s three airports.
Typical round-trip economy fares (USD, verified 8-9 Oct 2026):
| From | Cheapest RT found | Typical RT range |
|---|---|---|
| London (LHR) | $256 | $466-666 |
| Paris (CDG) | $205 | $352-536 |
| Frankfurt (FRA) | $287 | $411-605 |
| Dubai (DXB) | $363 (nonstop) | $379-596 |
| Moscow (MOW) | $228 (nonstop) | $228-347 |
No US city has a direct flight; US round-trips typically run ~$686-1,154. Fares are 72-hour snapshots and move constantly, so treat them as indicative.
Airport to Yerevan city centre (~12 km, 20-30 min):
- Bus 201 (marshrutka):
300 AMD ($0.80), daytime. - Elitebus / N201 express: 300 AMD one-way, ~20 min to the centre.
- Taxi apps (recommended): GG Taxi 2,000-3,500 AMD (
$5-9); Yandex Go 2,500-4,000 AMD ($6-10). Use the app for fixed pricing and avoid drivers who approach you inside arrivals.
2026 route changes worth knowing: Wizz Air launched the first-ever London-Yerevan direct flight in June 2026 and based a third aircraft at EVN in October 2026 (18 routes, 10 countries). Armenian Airlines suspended all operations from April 2025 (fleet renewal). Moscow-airspace drone disruptions caused periodic cancellations through 2026 — build slack into a Russia-connection itinerary. (Zvartnots Airport)
Where to stay
| Area | Budget | Mid-range | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yerevan centre | Hostel ~$6-14/night / guesthouse $14-28 | Mid-range hotel $28-56 | Best base for arrival, museums, and nightlife. Book ahead in harvest season. |
| Garni / Geghard | Guesthouse $15-30 | Hotel $40-80 | Base for the temple-and-monastery day trip. |
| Lake Sevan | Guesthouse / homestay $15-30 | Hotel $40-80 | Lakeside, cool in summer. Trout and khinkali on the shore. |
| Dilijan | Guesthouse $15-30 | Hotel $40-80 | Forested spa town, milder summer climate. |
| Goris / Tatev | Guesthouse $15-30 | Hotel $40-80 | Base for the south; book the Tatev cable car for day one. |
Accommodation is the biggest swing factor. Budget Your Trip (accessed 8 Oct 2026) puts the average mid-range room at $14 (5,017 AMD) per person per night and a typical double-occupancy hotel at $28 (10,035 AMD). Yerevan boutique hotels run higher than the regions.
Where to eat
| Meal | Budget | Mid-range |
|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | Bakery pastry + coffee ~$1-2 (500-800 AMD) | Cafe breakfast ~$3-6 (1,200-2,000 AMD) |
| Lunch | Street food / lavash wrap ~$1-3 (500-1,000 AMD) | Restaurant lunch ~$6-11 (2,000-4,000 AMD) |
| Dinner | Self-catering or canteen ~$3-5 (1,000-1,800 AMD) | Restaurant dinner ~$8-15 (3,000-5,500 AMD) |
| Drinks | Local beer ~$1-2 | Wine by the glass ~$3-6 |
Armenian food is hearty and cheap. Khorovats (grilled meat), dolma (stuffed vine leaves), lavash (flatbread, UNESCO-listed), and khorovats are the staples. An inexpensive restaurant meal is 4,000 AMD ($11) and a combo fast-food meal ~3,825 AMD. The self-catering-plus-one-restaurant strategy keeps food spend around $12-20/day even at mid-range. (Numbeo Yerevan, accessed 8 Oct 2026)
Itinerary sketch (7 days / 6 nights)
Day 1: Yerevan arrival — Land at EVN, bus or taxi into the city. Walk Republic Square, climb the Cascade Complex for rooftop city views (free), and browse the Vernissage Market (weekends). Dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Yerevan.
Day 2: Garni & Geghard — Day trip southeast. Garni Temple (~1,500 AMD), the only standing Hellenistic pagan temple in Armenia; the Symphony of Stones basalt canyon below it (free); and Geghard Monastery (UNESCO, carved into the rock, free). Overnight in Yerevan or Garni.
Day 3: Lake Sevan & Dilijan — Drive northeast to Lake Sevan, a large high-altitude lake — swim, eat trout and khinkali by the shore, and visit Sevanavank Monastery on the peninsula. Continue to the forested spa town of Dilijan. Overnight in Dilijan or Sevan.
Day 4: Khor Virap & Noravank — South to Khor Virap (~1,000 AMD), the monastery with the Mount Ararat view, then Noravank (UNESCO, red-rock canyon, free) and the Areni wine country for a cave-winery tasting. Overnight in the Areni/Goris area.
Day 5: Tatev & the south — Ride the Wings of Tatev cable car (round-trip ~9,000 AMD), the world’s longest reversible cable car at 5.7 km, to Tatev Monastery, a 9th-century hilltop complex. Afternoon back toward Yerevan or a slow evening in Goris.
Day 6: Yerevan deep dive — History Museum of Armenia (Urartian and early Armenian artefacts), the Matenadaran (ancient manuscripts), and an Ararat brandy factory tour and tasting. Evening on Tumanyan street’s cafe terraces.
Day 7: Departure — Final lavash and coffee, then bus or taxi to EVN.
Plan B (weather / closures): If a mountain day is rained out, swap it for more Yerevan museums, a brandy or wine tasting, or the Garni-Geghard loop, which is lower-elevation and more weather-resilient. Check border-area advisories before any southern route near the Azerbaijani frontier.

Safety
Armenia’s US State Department advisory is Level 2 (Exercise increased caution), issued 5 September 2025 (page last updated 10 September 2026), due to potential armed conflict in the region. That is a higher level than much of Europe, and it is specific: the risk is concentrated at the borders, not in the places visitors actually go.
- Level 4 — Do Not Travel: the border region with Azerbaijan. Past military action has occurred near the Armenia-Azerbaijan border and there is potential for armed conflict. Roads near the border may cross international lines without warning, and checkpoints may close roads without notice.
- Embassy-restricted areas: US embassy staff and families cannot travel for non-essential reasons to Gegharkunik region east of Vardenis and parts of Syunik (east of Goris and south of Kapan). Travel through Yeraskh village in Ararat region is allowed; stopping is not.
- The main tourist circuit is safe: Yerevan, Garni, Geghard, Lake Sevan, Dilijan, Noravank, Areni and the Tatev area sit well away from the restricted zones and are heavily visited. Violent crime against tourists is rare.
- Petty crime: low by regional standards. Normal city awareness in Yerevan applies.
- Driving: the practical daily risk is mountain roads — narrow, winding, and shared with livestock and slow trucks. If you hire a car, drive defensively; a hired driver for the monastery circuit (~$30-50/day) removes the stress.
- Emergency: 112 (police, fire, ambulance) or 911. Enrol in the STEP programme before travelling, and buy insurance that covers medical evacuation. (US State Department)
Good to know (2026)
- The visa-free rule is 180 days, but not for everyone. US, UK, EU/Schengen, Australian and Japanese passports get 180 days per year visa-free per Armenia’s MFA list. Canada is not on that list and is not visa-free, despite several travel sites claiming 180 days — the correction is worth knowing before you book. Non-exempt nationalities can apply for an e-Visa (visitor visa up to 120 days, USD 39; the Cabinet-approved consular tariff valid from 1 Jan 2026). (MFA visa-free list, consular fees)
- No digital-border formalities. There is no EES/ETIAS equivalent and no mandatory travel health insurance requirement for Armenia — unlike the EU, where EES biometric registration has been live since April 2026. Just a valid passport.
- Wizz Air changed the London picture in 2026. The first-ever direct London-Yerevan flight launched 8 June 2026 from Luton, and Wizz based a third aircraft at EVN in October 2026, taking the network to 18 routes across 10 countries. Eindhoven began 26 October 2026; Charleroi follows 1 February 2027. (Zvartnots Airport)
- September-October is harvest season. The Areni wine region and villages come alive with grape harvest, wine festivals, and the best produce of the year — and the weather is warm and dry. Autumn is arguably the best window.
- Cash still matters outside Yerevan. Cards are common in the capital, but monastery entry, marshrutkas, village guesthouses and markets are cash-first. Carry small dram notes.
- Armenia claims the world’s oldest winery. The Areni cave winery dates to ~4,100 BC, and Areni-1 holds the oldest known leather shoe. Harvest-season tastings run from ~$10-30.
- The dram is strong right now. At ~362 AMD/USD the currency is firmer than its historical average, so USD and EUR buying power is lower than in the weak-dram years — budget a touch more than older guides suggest.
- Tap water is generally safe in Yerevan but tastes chlorinated; bottled water is cheap (~250 AMD) and common in the regions. Bring a filter if you are sensitive.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does a day in Armenia cost?
- From the site's hand-verified dataset (October 2026): budget ~$17/day (6,261 AMD), mid-range ~$40/day (14,703 AMD), comfortable ~$84/day (30,593 AMD) per person. Budget gets you a guesthouse or hostel, street food and local transport. Mid gets a private room in a mid-range hotel, restaurant meals, and taxis between sights. Comfortable gets a boutique hotel, fine dining, and a private driver for the monastery circuit. Armenia is in the top 10% of European countries for affordability.
- Do I need a visa for Armenia?
- US, UK, EU/Schengen, Australian and Japanese passport holders do NOT need a visa for stays up to 180 days per year, per Armenia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs unilateral visa-free list. Important exception: CANADA IS NOT ON THAT LIST and is not visa-free despite several travel sites claiming it is. Non-exempt nationalities can get an e-Visa (visitor visa up to 120 days, USD 39). Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay. There is no EES/ETIAS and no mandatory travel health insurance requirement.
- Is Armenia safe for tourists?
- The US State Department advisory is Level 2 (Exercise increased caution), issued 5 September 2025 (page updated 10 September 2026), due to potential armed conflict. The border region with Azerbaijan is Level 4 (Do Not Travel); the embassy also bars its staff from parts of Gegharkunik and Syunik. The main tourist circuit — Yerevan, Garni, Geghard, Lake Sevan, Dilijan, Noravank — is safe and heavily visited. Petty crime is low; the practical risk is driving on mountain roads and border-area proximity.
- What is the best time to visit Armenia?
- May-June and September-October. Both are warm, dry, and green without the intense summer heat (July-August can exceed 35C in the Yerevan valley) or the cold, short days of winter. Autumn (September-October) adds harvest season in the wine regions and golden highland colours. Spring brings wildflowers. Avoid deep winter for mountain monasteries, which can be snowbound.
- Is Armenia cheap?
- Yes, by European standards. A mid-range day is around $40 including a private room, restaurant meals, and transport. An inexpensive restaurant meal is ~4,000 AMD (~$11) and a one-way city transit ride is 150 AMD (~$0.40). The big-ticket items are flights (from Europe $350-600 round-trip) and the Tatev cable car (9,000 AMD round-trip). Monasteries like Geghard and Noravank are free.
Where next?
- BaliThe Island of Gods on a budget — surf, rice terraces, and temple ceremonies for less than a Lisbon hostel, now with a tourist levy and a stronger rupiah.
- BhutanThe receipts line here is not the airfare, it is the per-night Sustainable Development Fee: the Royal Government of Bhutan charges every visitor US$100 per person per night, children 6-12 pay US$50, and the fee is paid with the visa, not at a hotel desk. On top of that you must travel with a licensed guide, and you cannot rent a car and drive it yourself. Thimphu food is genuinely cheap (Numbeo puts an inexpensive meal at Nu.250, ~$2.60), so the daily spend is the fee plus a guided programme, not food. The US State Department rates Bhutan Level 1, Exercise normal precautions, issued 4 September 2026, and the tourism authority names March-May and September-November as the climatically best months, with October the clearest of them.
- BusanKorea's second city is a coast-and-hills break that finally skips the Seoul crush: mid-range days run ₩150,000–260,000 (~$110–191), the metro is a 1,300-won flat fare, and October 2026 runs 17–22°C under the 31st Busan International Film Festival (6–15 Oct).
- Siem ReapGateway to Angkor Wat — Khmer temples, $1 street beer, and Southeast Asia's lowest daily costs, with September shoulder-season timing that trades a little rain for a lot fewer crowds.
- HanoiVietnam's chaotic, elegant capital — pho and egg coffee for a dollar, a UNESCO-flagged Old Quarter, and a perfect September-to-November autumn that puts the whole country on notice.
- Hoi AnLantern-lit UNESCO old town, a beach 15 minutes away, and street food under $2 — one of Southeast Asia's better-value heritage towns, if you dodge the flood season.
- IndiaThe subcontinent where a mid-range day sits around $55-90 - the Golden Triangle, Rajasthan forts, and Kerala backwaters all accessible on a backpacker budget, with October-March offering the best weather and the cheapest flights of the year.
- LaosThe Land of a Million Elephants on a budget — Luang Prabang temples, Kuang Si waterfalls, and Mekong river life for less than neighbouring Thailand, with a kip that has shed 3.4% against the dollar in 12 months. Hand-verified September 2026.
- MalaysiaMalaysia is the Southeast Asian budget sweet spot — a mid-range day runs ~RM285 (US$70) but hawker meals hold at RM5-15 and Grab rides cost less than parking back home, with visa-free 90-day entry for US passports and a flat Level 1 advisory that carries a kidnapping carveout for Eastern Sabah islands.
- NepalHimalayan kingdom where a mid-range day sits around $50-80 - Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, and medieval Kathmandu Valley temples all within reach of a backpacker budget.
- Philippines7,641 islands of white sand, turquoise lagoons, and some of the world's best diving - a mid-range day in the Philippines costs $72-136, but backpackers can thrive on $32-56. The peso's 2026 weakness makes it one of Southeast Asia's best value destinations.
- SamarkandSilk Road crown jewel where three madrasas frame the world's most beautiful square — and a mid-range day costs under $70.
- SeoulHyper-connected megacity where 5,000-year-old palaces meet K-pop futurism — and a mid-range day costs less than Western Europe.
- SingaporeCity-state where a mid-range day runs around SG$230 (about US$180) but hawker meals hold at S$3-5 and the MRT is world-class — Singapore is expensive at the hotel line and cheap almost everywhere else, with the mandatory SG Arrival Card the one new 2026 gate and Level 1 US advisory from March 2026.
- Sri LankaTropical island where ancient fortresses, tea highlands, and golden beaches pack into a space smaller than Ireland, and a mid-range day costs $75–140 with the new visa-free ETA for 40 countries.
- TaipeiOne of Asia's best-value big cities, with a famously cheap metro, night markets that feed you for a few dollars, and no tourist tax at all. Mid-range days run NT$3,400–5,800 (~$107–182), Taipei 101 costs NT$600 to look at the view, and the National Palace Museum is NT$350. October–November is the window: 21.9–24.6°C on the CWA's own 30-year means, past the typhoon season.
- TajikistanLandlocked Central Asian country where the Pamir Highway runs past snow-capped peaks above 4,600 m, visa-free for 30 days for US, EU, Canadian, Australian and Japanese passports (UK and Turkey are NOT on the list), with a mid-range day around $60 (553 TJS) and the GBAO permit the one unavoidable extra.
- ThailandThe Land of Smiles where a mid-range day sits around $60-100 - Bangkok temples, Chiang Mai mountains, and world-class scuba diving on a backpacker budget.
- TokyoNeon intensity, quiet temples, and a food scene that spans ¥100 sushi to three-Michelin — Tokyo rewards the curious at every budget.
