Where to Go in October & November 2026: Autumn Picks

2026-09-10

The short answer

Autumn 2026 is a tale of two seasons. In the Northern Hemisphere, summer crowds have thinned and prices are dropping from the Mediterranean to Japan — but the old “shoulder season” playbook is shrinking (our earlier post, Shoulder Season Deals Shrink in 2026, covers why). Meanwhile, in the Southern Hemisphere, spring is blooming: jacaranda trees are turning Buenos Aires purple, Patagonia is shaking off winter, and the weak peso still makes Argentina a dollar-holder’s playground.

This guide covers where autumn 2026 actually rewards you — lower prices, good weather, or both — with dated daily costs from our verified dataset and published sources. Every destination below either has a full guide on this site or enough sourced data to plan with confidence.

Europe: The Mediterranean sweet spot

October is the last month you can swim the Aegean and Adriatic without summer crowds or summer prices. By November, the water cools and ferry schedules thin — but cities from Athens to Lisbon stay warm enough for walking, sightseeing, and outdoor dining.

DestinationOctober WeatherNovember WeatherDaily Mid (2026)Notes
Greece (Athens + Islands)22–26°C, warm seas16–19°C, cooler seas€90–150 ($105–174)October: warmest swimmable water, 20–30% cheaper than August. November: city-only, cheaper still. Our guide →
Portugal (Lisbon + Porto)18–23°C, sunny14–18°C, occasional rain€80–130 ($92–150)Harvest season in the Douro Valley. November rains pick up in the north. Our guide →
Albania (Riviera)20–25°C, mild15–20°C, cooler$56–114Half the price of Croatia next door. October is ideal; November is shoulder. Our guide →
Budapest10–18°C, crisp3–10°C, cold€55–75 ($64–88)Thermal baths shine in cold weather. November is cheapest. Our guide →
Romania8–17°C, cool2–8°C, cold€80–130 ($92–150)Transylvania in autumn fog is atmospheric. December Christmas markets spike prices. Our guide →
Antalya Coast (Turkey)22–28°C, warm18–23°C, mild$60–100October is prime beach weather; November is too cool for swimming but fine for ruins. Our guide →

Our pick: Greece in October. The water is warmest in September–October (25–26°C), the crowds of July–August are gone, and accommodation drops 20–30% from peak. Athens + a shoulder-season island hop (Paros, Naxos, Crete) delivers the best value.

Honorable mention: Portugal. Lisbon is walkable year-round, the Algarve is still sunny in October, and Porto’s port lodges are harvesting. November is rainier but cheaper.

Asia: Shoulder seasons and silk roads

DestinationOctober WeatherNovember WeatherDaily Mid (2026)Notes
Samarkand, Uzbekistan18–25°C, dry8–15°C, cool$59–118Peak autumn month. Registan light show runs spring–autumn. Our guide →
Hanoi, Vietnam22–28°C, cool/clear18–24°C, mild$33–50Peak month. Autumn is the best time to visit northern Vietnam. Our guide →
Seoul, South Korea12–22°C, crisp2–10°C, cold$95–147Foliage peaks October–November. Winter approaches in late November. Our guide →
Tokyo, Japan17–23°C, mild10–17°C, crisp$75–113Foliage peaks late November. Weak yen (159/USD) makes this the best Japan value in years. Our guide →
Siem Reap, Cambodia25–32°C, wet tail22–30°C, dry start$35–60October is shoulder (some rain); November is dry-season opening. Our guide →

Our pick: Samarkand in October. The weather is perfect (18–25°C, dry), the Registan light show is running, and it’s the last month before winter cold sets in. A 3-day Samarkand stop paired with a shoulder-season Europe flight (Istanbul or Dubai connection) makes a distinctive autumn trip.

Honorable mention: Japan in late November. Autumn foliage is peaking across Honshu (Tokyo Nov 26, Kyoto Nov 27 per Nippon.com’s 2026 forecast), and the weak yen (159 JPY/USD, Trading Economics) makes this the most affordable Japan has been in years. Expect crowds at popular foliage spots.

Southern Hemisphere: Spring is blooming

October–November is spring in the Southern Hemisphere — and some of the best value is found here, where the dollar stretches furthest against weaker currencies.

DestinationOctober WeatherNovember WeatherDaily Mid (2026)Notes
Buenos Aires, Argentina15–22°C, mild18–25°C, pleasant$55–90 (tourist rate)Jacaranda bloom in November. MEP tourist card rate makes this a weak-currency win. Our guide →
Peru17–24°C (Lima), dry19–26°C (Lima), dry$45–80Dry season peak. September is the quiet edge before October crowds. Our guide →
Cape Town, South Africa15–22°C, mild17–24°C, warming$70–120Spring wildflowers in the Karoo. November is dry and pleasant. Our guide →

Our pick: Buenos Aires in November. Jacaranda trees are blooming purple, the weather is 18–25°C, and the MEP/tourist card rate (~1,495 ARS per USD) makes this one of the cheapest capitals in the Americas for dollar-holders. Pair with a shoulder-season Patagonia day trip (El Chalten, Ushuaia) for a two-week spring itinerary.

The Americas: Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America

Medellín, Colombia17–26°C, mild17–26°C, mild$40–60Eternal spring climate. October is shoulder; November is dry. Indie Traveller

Banff, Canada2–12°C, cold-5–3°C, snow$105–187 CAD (~$76–135 USD)Snow arrives in November. October is the last shoulder month before ski season. Our guide →

Our pick: Oaxaca for Dia de los Muertos (October 31–November 2). The celebrations are world-class, the weather is dry and warm, and daily costs run $45–65 (street food, guesthouses, local transport). Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead — the holiday spike is real.

The honest negatives (where autumn doesn’t deliver)

Not every destination rewards an autumn trip. A few caveats:

  • Buenos Aires in October is pleasant but not peak — jacarandas bloom in November, not October. If you’re chasing the purple trees, wait a month.
  • Japan in October is mild but not foliage season. The leaves don’t peak until late November in most of Honshu. October is still worth visiting for the weak yen, but don’t expect autumn colors.
  • Greek islands in November lose ferry frequency and many seasonal hotels close. Stick to Athens, Crete, or Rhodes for a November visit.
  • Southeast Asia in October is tail-end monsoon in some regions (central Vietnam, southern Thailand). Hanoi is perfect; Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City can be wet.

Good to know (2026)

  • The “secret season” is no longer secret. As we covered in Shoulder Season Deals Shrink in 2026, blanket “fall is cheaper” advice doesn’t hold everywhere. The savings have migrated to specific corridors — this post maps where they landed.
  • Jet fuel is still elevated. Trading Economics shows jet fuel is up sharply since the Iran war began in February 2026. Book flights 2–3 months ahead for the best autumn fares.
  • The weak yen is a Japan game-changer. At 159 JPY/USD, a mid-range day in Tokyo runs $75–113 — comparable to Western Europe, for a very different experience. This won’t last forever; go while the rate holds.
  • Argentina’s MEP rate is the real tourist hack. Foreign cards settle at the tourist/MEP rate (~1,495 ARS/USD), not the official rate. This effectively makes Buenos Aires one of the cheapest capitals in the Americas for dollar-holders — but the peso is volatile, so re-check the rate the week you fly.
  • Dia de los Muertos requires advance booking. Oaxaca, Pátzcuaro, and Mixquic spike in late October. Book accommodation 6–8 weeks ahead; prices double during the holiday.
